AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) - While many city offices and departments are closed for the holidays, a team of local volunteers called Operation Clean City continues its mission to keep Augusta’s streets clean.

Whether it’s two volunteers or twenty, Operation Clean City has made it its mission to clean the streets each week. The group's commitment to maintaining the cleanliness of the city is a testament to the power of community involvement.

Volunteers say they got tired of watching from the sidelines and wanted to put on gloves and be part of something bigger than themselves. What began as a public service has grown into a hobby. Volunteers help maintain the city while walking and talking with friends, meeting first at Tire City Potters, where supplies are stored before hitting the streets.

The group has been active for over a decade, and during holidays like New Year’s, the importance of their work becomes even more evident. A.C. Daniel, the group’s lead volunteer who recently took on the role, emphasized the significance of community-driven efforts. He said the goal is simple — empower the community to work together and keep Augusta clean.

“We need more of us who don’t wait for somebody or something else or a big organization or something to mandate our own power to do good in our communities,” Daniel said. “And I think the more we do that, just the healthier and better off and stronger we’re going to be together. I think we can all agree, like we don’t want trash on our streets, you know, let’s do that together.”

Operation Clean City encourages volunteers to come out and join and says it’s open to collaborating with anyone — even the city — to do whatever it takes to get the streets clean. The group meets every Sunday morning at 9 in front of Tire City Potters.

Here are some key points about the group:

  • Mission: To keep Augusta’s streets clean through regular volunteer efforts.
  • Frequency: Weekly cleanups, with increased activity during holidays.
  • Location: Meetings take place at Tire City Potters, where supplies are stored.
  • Inclusivity: Open to anyone interested in contributing to the community.
  • Leadership: A.C. Daniel serves as the lead volunteer, emphasizing the importance of community empowerment.

The group’s approach not only focuses on cleaning up the city but also on fostering a sense of unity and shared responsibility among residents. By coming together, volunteers create a positive impact that extends beyond just removing litter from the streets.

Operation Clean City’s dedication highlights how small, consistent actions can lead to significant changes in a community. Their efforts serve as an inspiration for others to get involved and make a difference in their own neighborhoods.

For those interested in joining, the group welcomes new members every Sunday at 9 a.m. This ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement ensures that Augusta remains a cleaner and more vibrant place for everyone.
