Top transfer portal defender linked to LSU and Tennessee football

LSU's Aggressive Strategy in the Transfer Portal
Lane Kiffin and the LSU Tigers are making waves in the college football landscape as the program in Baton Rouge is positioning itself as a top contender for several highly-ranked players in the NCAA Transfer Portal. With the transfer window opening, Kiffin has been actively preparing to make a significant impact over the next two weeks.
LSU is leveraging its financial resources to build a competitive 2026 roster. The team has already seen 22 players depart, creating numerous scholarship opportunities. This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the team’s depth and talent pool. According to Kiffin, the administration has developed a solid plan that includes support from donors and a clear vision for attracting top-tier talent.
“[LSU AD Verge Ausberry] and his team had a really, really good plan,” Kiffin said on December 1. “Even talking to some donors that are part of that plan here to see exactly, how does that work? There’s a great plan here.”
He emphasized that the success of any program hinges on having quality players. “There’s a great plan here of how we can come together with what we bring and with what players around the country want to play for us and our systems, and then have that support to do that, so that they want to play for us and they get taken care of financially. Obviously, nowadays, it’s the world of college football and it’s important and it’s critical to them. It’s important to them. This was the best setup. That definitely played a factor into it. I don’t care what your systems are. Without good players, they don’t work.”

Chaz Coleman: A Key Target for LSU
One of the most sought-after prospects in the Transfer Portal is Penn State’s Chaz Coleman, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound true freshman who signed with the Nittany Lions as a top recruit in the 2025 recruiting cycle. Following a coaching change, Coleman has entered the portal, making him the No. 1 EDGE available.
The Ohio native was initially linked to the Ohio State Buckeyes, but recent developments suggest a shift in interest. According to On3 Sports' Steve Wiltfong, the Buckeyes were the first program to express interest in Coleman, but LSU and Tennessee have emerged as strong contenders as the price tag for his commitment continues to rise.
“The No. 2 player overall Chaz Coleman - from Penn State - an Ohio native. The Buckeyes were the first program mentioned and they're in strong talks with the Chaz Coleman camp early in this transfer portal cycle,” Wiltfong said. “But sounds like it's LSU and Tennessee that are the programs emerging as the price tag continues going up for Chaz Coleman in the initial discussions for his signature.”
The Impact on LSU's Defense
With several defensive linemen set to depart this offseason, Coleman's potential addition could significantly bolster LSU's defense. Rivals reports that he is now a name to watch as the Tigers look to rebuild their roster under Kiffin’s leadership.
The Transfer Portal officially opened on January 2 and will remain open until January 16. During this period, Kiffin and his staff are focused on identifying and securing top talent to strengthen the team.
Other Notable Developments
LSU has also been in the news for other developments in the transfer portal. For instance, a wide receiver from Oklahoma has been labeled as a potential "biggest bust" in the market. Additionally, Kiffin has made headlines for pulling off a historic recruiting feat during his first month with the program. He has also shared insights into how legendary coaches like Nick Saban and Pete Carroll influenced his decision to join LSU.
