Top European Cities UK Travelers Can't Wait to Visit in 2026 Revealed
Changing Trends in European City Breaks
A recent survey of city break travelers has revealed some interesting insights into how people are planning their trips for 2026. More than half (56%) of holidaymakers intend to travel more frequently next year, but many are also looking to cut costs. This trend suggests a shift in priorities when it comes to planning and budgeting for vacations.
Location Over Luxury
The research found that location often takes precedence over luxury when choosing a place to stay. Among the 2,000 participants who had taken a European city break in the past 12 months or plan to do so in the next 12 months, 71% emphasized the importance of a prime city centre location. Only 7% would prioritize luxury facilities, while 9% prefer on-site food and drink options. Additionally, 7% look for gyms and fitness amenities in their accommodations.

Budget Adjustments
Nearly a third (29%) of holidaymakers expect to reduce their overall spending on European city breaks next year, while 9% plan to spend more. This data was collected as part of a survey conducted for Safestay, a pan-European hostel operator. The findings indicate that travelers are becoming more conscious of their expenses and are seeking value for money without compromising on the quality of their experiences.
Memorable Experiences
When asked what made their favorite European city break memorable, nearly a fifth (18%) of respondents cited great local food and drink, while 15% highlighted the people they traveled with. These factors seem to play a significant role in shaping positive memories of a trip.
Top Destinations for 2026
Looking ahead, Prague and Copenhagen jointly topped the list of European cities that UK holidaymakers most want to visit in 2026, each receiving 17% of the votes. Venice, Athens, Barcelona, and Paris followed closely, with 14%, 14%, 13%, and 13% respectively. This data was gathered through a survey conducted by Find Out Now.
Expert Insights
Peter Zielke, the chief operating officer of Safestay, commented on the findings, stating: “This research highlights a clear shift in how people are thinking about city breaks. Travelers prioritizing experiences over fills and are becoming much more deliberate about where they spend their money – with being right in the heart of a city, close to the culture, food and attractions the most important factor.”
Conclusion
As travelers prepare for their next city break, the emphasis is clearly on location, experiences, and budget-conscious decisions. With a growing number of people planning to travel more often in 2026, the focus remains on finding the right balance between cost and quality. Whether it's exploring the vibrant streets of Prague or enjoying the scenic beauty of Venice, the key is to create unforgettable memories while making smart financial choices.
