The Impact of Mistakes

One intriguing finding from behavioral science is that we are often more forgiving of human errors than machine errors. When a human makes a mistake, we understand and sometimes empathize. For some, AI isn't just unfamiliar; it's existentially unsettling. Professionals such as teachers, writers, lawyers, and designers are now facing tools that replicate parts of their work. This isn't merely about automation; it's about redefining what makes our skills valuable and what it means to be human.

This situation can trigger an identity threat, a concept explored by social psychologist Claude Steele. It refers to the fear that one's expertise or uniqueness is being diminished. The result can be resistance, defensiveness, or outright dismissal of the technology. In this context, distrust isn't a flaw—it's a psychological defense mechanism.

The Need for Emotional Cues

Human trust is built on more than logic. We rely on tone, facial expressions, hesitation, and eye contact. AI lacks these emotional cues. While it may be fluent and even charming, it doesn't reassure us in the same way a person would. Algorithms have been shown to reflect and reinforce biases, particularly in areas like recruitment, policing, and credit scoring.
