Shreveport Homicides Drop 19% in 2025, Police Report
Shreveport, La. — The Shreveport Police Department (SPD) has reported a notable decrease in homicides in 2025, continuing a trend of decline that has been observed over the past few years. This reduction marks a significant shift from the peak numbers seen in previous years, offering a glimmer of hope for the community.
According to SPD data, the department investigated 42 homicide cases in 2025, a drop from 52 in 2024. Looking further back, the numbers show a clear downward trajectory: 80 homicides in 2023, 50 in 2022, and a high of 91 in 2021. These statistics highlight the progress made by the department in addressing violent crime.
Key details from the 2025 data include:
- Total homicides: 42
- Average age of victims: 33.6 years
- Victims aged 29 and under: 22
- Gender distribution: Approximately three out of four victims are male
The decline in homicides is being attributed to a combination of strategic efforts by the police department and broader community initiatives. SPD officials have emphasized that this downward trend is not accidental but the result of a multi-pronged approach aimed at keeping the city safe.
“We will continue to do everything possible to support our boots on the ground by strategically and effectively allocating personnel, resources, and operational support. Our detectives will receive ongoing, comprehensive training—both internally and externally—to ensure they remain current on the latest investigative techniques and technological advancements, strengthening the quality and effectiveness of our investigations,” said Cpl. Chris Bordelon with SPD.

A major component of the department’s strategy involves fostering strong community partnerships. By working closely with local organizations such as Crime Stoppers, SPD aims to encourage public participation in solving crimes. This collaboration is seen as vital for gathering investigative leads and maintaining a sense of security within the community.
In addition to community engagement, the department is investing heavily in technology to improve efficiency and transparency. The Real-Time Crime Center is expanding, and new tools like the Axon body-worn camera system are being implemented. These technologies allow for quicker evidence collection and faster processing of court cases.
Another key aspect of SPD’s plan is interagency cooperation. Building on strong relationships with federal partners, the Sheriff’s Office, and neighboring agencies, the department believes that collaboration is essential for reducing crime and enhancing public safety.
“Chief [Wayne] Smith’s highest priorities include continued cooperation among multiple agencies. Our strong working relationships with federal partners, the Sheriff’s Office, and neighboring agencies have proven highly effective and will remain essential in our ongoing efforts to reduce crime and keep our community safe,” said Cpl. Bordelon.
While the 2025 numbers are encouraging, SPD acknowledges that long-term reductions in violent crime require sustained effort and investment. The department is committed to monitoring trends, refining enforcement strategies, and expanding community outreach programs.
Residents are encouraged to stay involved in neighborhood safety efforts and to report any suspicious activity through Crime Stoppers. By working together, the community and law enforcement can continue to make progress in creating a safer environment for all.
