SAVANNAH, Ga. – A mother from Savannah shared a heart-wrenching experience that turned what was meant to be a simple New Year treat for her daughter into a moment of frustration and disappointment.

Paula Connelly recounted how her daughter, Nykiah, who has cerebral palsy, was denied a manicure at a local nail salon in Oglethorpe Mall on Tuesday. According to Connelly, the salon refused to provide the service, citing difficulties in drying Nykiah’s nails with the gel polish light, even if she helped hold her hand steady.

“She came home and said, ‘Mom, that woman looked straight in my eyes and told me no.’ And that was a gut punch that hit me again,” Connelly shared. The incident was captured in a TikTok video that quickly went viral, garnering thousands of views and reactions online.

Connelly explained that the nail technician immediately declined the request upon seeing Nykiah’s hands folded. “Right off the bat, she looked at Nykiah, saw her hands folded, and just started saying no,” she said. Connelly tried to reassure the technician that she could help hold her daughter’s hand, as she does every day, but the response remained the same.

The experience left Connelly deeply affected, not only by the rejection but also by the emotional impact on her daughter. “As a mom, seeing my daughter frustrated, and trying to hold back tears while staying strong for her,” she said.

The TikTok video has since received over 28,000 likes and nearly 300,000 views, sparking conversations about inclusivity and accessibility. Dozens of nail technicians reached out to Connelly after the video went viral, showing support and offering assistance.

One local nail technician, Monica, visited the family at home to give Nykiah a manicure. “When the nail tech Monica came over, she had all of the equipment, the same equipment that they had at the nail salon. And we did it, like I say, in less than an hour. And Nykiah loves her nails,” Connelly said.

This experience has reinforced Connelly’s determination to persevere. “Our theme is the Year of Perseverance. These first two days of the new year have reminded me to continue persevering, not just for Nykiah, but for all people with disabilities,” she said.

The nail salon, Us Nails, responded to the situation, stating that the gel polish light wouldn’t have worked, even with assistance, because it was difficult to hold Nykiah’s hand steady under the machine. They added that regular polish, which dries naturally without a light, could have been an alternative option. They also mentioned that they often serve people with disabilities.

This incident highlights the importance of understanding and accommodating individuals with different needs. It serves as a reminder that small acts of kindness and willingness to adapt can make a significant difference in someone's life.
