Rockies' Opening Day Lineup: Veteran Free Agent Fills Key Need
The Colorado Rockies have been relatively quiet during the free agency period, with their new president of baseball operations, Paul DePodesta, taking a measured approach. This is not unexpected, given that DePodesta assumed his role in early November for a franchise that has endured three consecutive seasons with over 100 losses. The team is currently focused on evaluating its roster and planning for the future, including the 2026 season and beyond.
There have been some discussions about potential trades, particularly involving outfielder Brenton Doyle. However, it seems unlikely that DePodesta would be quick to move on a player like Doyle this offseason. Instead, the focus appears to be on addressing key areas of need, such as first base, where the Rockies are looking to bring in a veteran through free agency.
Several options are available to DePodesta, and one of them could be Nathaniel Lowe, according to predictions by Joel Reuter of Bleacher Report. Reuter suggested that Lowe could be part of the Rockies' Opening Day lineup against the Miami Marlins in South Florida, batting fourth behind catcher Hunter Goodman.
Lowe has played for four different teams throughout his career: the Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, and Boston Red Sox. In 2025, he split the season between the Nationals and Red Sox. After hitting 16 home runs and driving in 68 runs, the Nationals designated him for assignment in August. He was then picked up by the Red Sox, who needed a first baseman due to injuries late in the season.
In his time with the Red Sox, Lowe posted a .228/.307/.381 batting line, with two home runs and 16 RBIs. Despite his performance, the Red Sox did not bring him back, as they upgraded their first base position by acquiring Wilsson Contreras from the St. Louis Cardinals and getting Triston Casas back from injury.
For the Rockies, Lowe could be a good fit, especially considering the advantages of playing at Coors Field. His swing and ability to hit for power could translate well in Denver. Additionally, if Lowe performs well in Colorado, he could become a valuable trade asset later in the season, as the Rockies might look to move him to a contender seeking a bat at the deadline.
Other potential candidates for the Rockies' first base position include Rhys Hoskins, Ty France, and LaMonte Wade Jr. Each of these players brings a different set of skills and experiences, and DePodesta will need to evaluate which option best fits the team's needs and long-term goals.
As the Rockies continue to assess their roster, the decision on whether to pursue a veteran first baseman or explore other avenues will be critical. The team's success in the coming seasons may depend on how effectively they address their weaknesses and build a competitive roster.
