Police Justified in Deadly Hartford Shooting Case

Overview of the Incident
In Hartford, Maine, a tragic incident occurred on March 29, 2025, when police officers used deadly force against a man named Eric Newell. The Maine Attorney General’s Office has since concluded that the actions taken by the officers were justified.
Details of the Call for Help
The incident began when an 80-year-old man contacted 911, claiming that his stepson, Eric Newell, had assaulted and strangled him. According to the report, the man was located in a barn on Tucker Road while Newell was inside the house. The man described visible ligature marks on his neck, which raised concerns about his safety.
Police Response and Communication
Police arrived at the scene and spoke with the man who had called for help. They were aware of Newell's history of aggression towards law enforcement. During their initial contact, the police managed to reach Newell on the phone, where he indicated he had access to a gun. Officers instructed him to come out of the house for arrest, but Newell refused, telling them to come get him and then hung up the phone.
Escalation and Further Interaction
After requesting additional backup, police were able to contact Newell again. During this call, Newell expressed that he was in pain and wanted to hurt himself. He also mentioned holding a knife to his own neck. Newell then stated that he was coming out and didn’t care if they shot him.
The Final Moments
As Newell exited the home, body camera footage captured multiple officers urging him to put the knife down. As the officers approached, Newell appeared to stab himself in the chest. A deputy attempted to use a taser, but it failed to immobilize him. Newell continued to move toward the deputy while still holding the knife. At this point, the deputy and another officer fired at Newell.
Aftermath and Investigation
Newell died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. The Maine Attorney General’s Office determined that both deputies acted in self-defense and the defense of another, justifying the use of deadly force.
Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Reece Rodrique and Derek MacDonald were placed on administrative leave during the investigation, a standard procedure following a police shooting. Notably, the Maine Attorney General’s Office has never ruled that the use of deadly force was not justified in a police shooting in Maine.
