Officer Saves Puppy From Trash Compactor and Adoptes Him

A one-year-old terrier mix was found in a self-compacting trash can in Los Angeles County last week, but thanks to the quick actions of a police officer, the puppy was rescued just in time. The officer not only saved the dog’s life but also later returned to give him a forever home.
According to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles, a police officer in Gardena, California, heard faint whimpers coming from a trash can outside a local church during the busy holiday rush late last month. The officer investigated and discovered a small, scared dog inside — a terrier mix who had been discarded like garbage.
“Inside, the officer found a small, scared dog, now known as Flan, who had been tossed away like trash,” spcaLA said in a statement.

The officer immediately rescued the puppy and contacted Gardena Animal Control. Flan was then taken to the spcaLA South Bay Adoption Center, where he received medical care, food, and shelter while completing a mandatory stray hold.
Security cameras were present outside the church, according to spcaLA, but the footage was not released to police. The nonprofit did not immediately say whether the incident remains under investigation.
However, what could have ended tragically instead turned into a happy ending. Days after the rescue, the same officer returned to the adoption center — this time with his family — to adopt Flan and give him what spcaLA described as “the safe and loving home he deserves.”
“This is one rescue we’ll never forget,” the nonprofit said.
A Story of Compassion and Second Chances
The story of Flan highlights the importance of community awareness and the power of compassion. It also underscores the critical role that animal control and shelters play in rescuing animals in distress.
Here are some key points about Flan’s rescue:
- The officer heard the dog's cries and acted quickly.
- The dog was found in a self-compacting trash can, which posed a serious risk to its life.
- After being rescued, Flan received necessary medical attention and care at the adoption center.
- Despite the lack of surveillance footage, the incident remains under consideration by authorities.
How You Can Help
If you come across an animal in distress, it is important to act swiftly and contact local authorities or animal welfare organizations. Here are some steps you can take:
- Call local animal control or law enforcement.
- Provide details about the location and condition of the animal.
- Avoid handling the animal unless it is safe to do so.
- Share the story on social media to raise awareness.
Flan’s story is a reminder that even in difficult circumstances, there is always hope. With the right support and care, animals can find new beginnings and loving homes.
