A Tradition of Unity and Joy

At the Norman High School cafeteria, hundreds of people gathered, families, friends, and neighbors all sharing a Christmas meal. The energy was joyful, the food was amazing, and the message was simple: everyone was welcome. This Christmas day tradition has brought the community together for nearly four decades. The Norman Christmas Day Community Dinner served a free holiday meal, no questions asked, for anyone who wanted to come and enjoy a warm meal.

The holiday spirit was alive and well as people laughed together and listened to live Christmas music while kids got the chance to visit with Santa. For many, the day was about connection, especially for those who might otherwise have spent Christmas alone. The event was founded 39 years ago by Bob Magarian to create a space built on acceptance and togetherness.

"We hope that they have a wonderful Christmas and that they're not alone because our motto is 'no one should eat alone,' and we love them to be with us and to be with other people," Magarian said.

Year after year, that mission continued, renewing spirits and reminding the community what the holiday season is really about.

Volunteers Make the Difference

Dozens of volunteers worked nonstop to make sure everyone felt at home. These volunteers chose to spend Christmas Day helping those in need and giving back to their community. "Spreading that Christmas love is ultimately the goal, and we just want to make people feel special, especially those who don't have family," Kenadee Starr, a volunteer at the event, said.

Starr's family joined her in serving meals with her sister, flying in from Florida to help spread holiday cheer. "My nana and this year my aunt came with her kid and wife, and my uncle, and my sister," Starr said. "She lives in Florida, so she traveled all the way to do this, so we love it."

Volunteers like Starr are essential to the success of the event. Their efforts ensure that every guest feels welcomed and valued. The dinner ran until 2 this afternoon, and organizers said every single person who walked through the door was considered family.

A Celebration of Togetherness

The event is more than just a meal; it's a celebration of togetherness and compassion. It provides an opportunity for people to come together, share in the joy of the season, and support one another. Whether someone is alone, far from home, or simply looking for a place to belong, the Norman Christmas Day Community Dinner offers a sense of belonging and warmth.

For many, the experience is deeply personal. It’s a chance to connect with others, share stories, and create memories that will last a lifetime. The presence of Santa and the live Christmas music adds to the festive atmosphere, making it a truly magical day for children and adults alike.

Impact and Legacy

Over the years, the tradition has grown and evolved, but its core values remain unchanged. It continues to bring people together, regardless of their background or circumstances. The event serves as a reminder of the importance of kindness, generosity, and community.

Organizers and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure that the event runs smoothly each year. They understand the impact it has on the lives of those who attend. For many, it's not just a meal—it's a lifeline during a time when loneliness can be a real challenge.

The legacy of the Norman Christmas Day Community Dinner is one of hope and unity. It stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of the holiday season. As long as there are people who need a place to belong, this tradition will continue to thrive.
