The Emotional Journey of Will in "Stranger Things" Season 5

As “Stranger Things” approaches its final season, the character of Will Byers has undergone significant emotional growth. In Season 5, Vol. 2, the story continues to explore his journey, particularly in Episode 7 titled “The Bridge.” This episode marks a pivotal moment for Will as he comes out to his closest friends and family.

In a heartfelt monologue, Noah Schnapp’s portrayal of Will reveals that he is gay. Sitting with his best friend Mike, his mother Joyce, and brother Jonathan, Will shares his truth in a deeply vulnerable moment. His loved ones respond with unwavering support, reaffirming their commitment to stand by him no matter what.

Schnapp described the scene as “nerve-wracking,” noting the pressure of having the entire cast present during the filming. He initially expected only a private conversation with his mother, but the presence of everyone made the experience even more intense.

This coming-out moment has been a long time coming. In 2022, after the release of Season 4, Schnapp told Variety that Will had feelings for Mike. He explained that the show had been building this storyline over multiple seasons, with hints dating back to Season 1. By Season 5, it was clear that Will was not only gay but also in love with Mike.

Will’s decision to come out was influenced by observing Robin, played by Maya Hawke, kissing her girlfriend, Vickie. This moment inspired him to seek advice from Robin on how to navigate his own feelings.

Schnapp emphasized the significance of this moment, noting that it had been built up in his mind for years. He expressed concern about the impact it would have on viewers facing similar struggles with self-identity. “You just want it to be as perfect as possible,” he said, highlighting the pressure to make the scene meaningful and authentic.

Throughout the process, Schnapp had the opportunity to provide input to the show’s creators, Ross and Matt Duffer, and its writers. While he felt the script was largely well-written, he shared insights that helped shape new scenes. He also praised Jonathan, played by Charlie Heaton, as Will’s biggest supporter. Jonathan has consistently shown understanding and support for his younger brother, making him a key figure in Will’s journey.

Schnapp also reflected on the emotional impact of seeing Jonathan react to Will’s coming out. “I love their relationship,” he said, adding that watching Jonathan’s reaction brought tears to his eyes.

As the series moves into Episode 8, titled “The Rightside Up,” Will is portrayed as more confident and empowered. Schnapp noted that Will no longer feels held back, having accepted himself fully. This acceptance allows him to harness his inner strength, which becomes crucial in the battle against Vecna.

The Duffer brothers confirmed that Will’s connection to the Upside Down and Vecna was something they had planned to explore since earlier seasons. They acknowledged that this connection was worth developing further, especially as the series reached its conclusion.

From his disappearance in Season 1, which set the entire story in motion, Will’s role in the series felt both organic and inevitable. The final season centers around him, bringing his journey full circle.

After the final episode, Schnapp hopes fans will feel satisfied that the stories have come to a fulfilling end. “I just want them to be satisfied like, ‘OK, these stories are finished,’” he said. While fans may miss the characters, he believes they will appreciate the closure provided by the series.

“Stranger Things” Season 5, Vol. 3, is set to premiere on New Year’s Eve, December 31, at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET on Netflix.
