New Year, New Goals: The Power of Consistency in Fitness

As the new year begins, many people set their sights on achieving personal goals, with fitness often at the top of the list. Whether it's taking the first step into a gym or recommitting to a workout routine, the common objective is progress. Erik Underwood, a yoga instructor and trainer at South Reno Athletic Club, emphasizes that consistency is key to success in any fitness journey.

Building a Routine for Long-Term Success

Underwood explains that the real transformation happens when individuals stick to a routine over time. “It’s the consistency over time that suddenly you wake up and like ‘Oh My God I’ve worked out 7 days in a row or I’ve worked out 21 days in a row or a couple months.’ And not that you have to do it all those days in a row, but suddenly you just wake up and you are that person now. And that takes a bunch of little baby steps,” he said.

For some, the idea of going to the gym can be intimidating, and staying motivated can be even more challenging. However, Underwood suggests that sharing your fitness goals with others can make a significant difference. “If you have a strong sense of community, then you’re more likely to reach your goals because you’re doing them with people. Not just on your own.”

Creating a Supportive Environment

Malia Ascuaga, Content Director at South Reno Athletic Center, highlights the importance of creating a welcoming space where everyone feels comfortable pursuing their fitness goals. She notes that the staff understands that each individual starts their journey at a different point. “We all start at Day 1 at some point and I think with this community here, everyone is accepting and welcoming. There’s a lot more consistency when you feel supported,” said Ascuaga.

The center aims to foster an environment where members can feel encouraged and supported throughout their fitness journey. This sense of belonging helps individuals stay committed to their goals and continue making progress.

Embracing the Journey, Not Perfection

Fitness professionals remind everyone that the most important resolution they can make isn’t about achieving perfection. Instead, it’s about showing up, being patient with oneself, and recognizing that the journey should not be taken alone. “It’s always about showing up, being patient with yourself, and remembering the journey isn’t meant to be taken alone,” said Underwood.

This mindset shift allows individuals to focus on their growth rather than comparing themselves to others. It encourages a healthier relationship with fitness and promotes long-term success.

Tips for Staying Motivated

To help maintain motivation, consider the following strategies:

  • Set realistic goals: Start with small, achievable objectives that can build confidence over time.
  • Track progress: Keeping a record of workouts and improvements can provide a sense of accomplishment.
  • Find a workout buddy: Exercising with a friend or joining a group can make the experience more enjoyable and keep you accountable.
  • Celebrate milestones: Recognize and reward yourself for reaching key points in your fitness journey.
  • Stay flexible: Life can be unpredictable, so being open to adjusting your routine as needed is essential.

By focusing on consistency, community, and self-compassion, individuals can create a sustainable fitness routine that supports their overall well-being.
