Medical Student Faces Murder Charges After Alleged Subway Attack

A Disturbing Subway Attack in the Bronx

A shocking incident occurred in the Bronx when a 73-year-old grandfather was pushed into a moving subway train, leaving him with severe head injuries. The attack happened just hours after the New Year celebrations, adding to the sense of confusion and distress surrounding the event.

The victim, Julio Figueroa, was standing on the platform at the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium subway station around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday when a complete stranger approached him and shoved him into a southbound 4 train that had just entered the station. According to police, Figueroa bounced off the moving train and hit the platform, sustaining serious head injuries.

The Suspect and His Charges

The suspect in this case is Anton Aleshin, a 29-year-old medical student. He has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, assault, reckless endangerment, and harassment. Aleshin has pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.

Aleshin’s attorney is affiliated with the nonprofit organization Legal Aid. However, they have not provided any public comments regarding the case. Prosecutors have revealed that Aleshin is part of a residency program at Brookdale University Hospital. A spokesperson for One Brooklyn Health system, which represents Brookdale, declined to comment on the ongoing investigation.

The Victim's Condition and Family Reaction

Figueroa, who is a grandfather to 17 children, is currently recovering in the ICU at Lincoln Hospital. His niece, Venis Falu, shared that he has stitches in the back of his head. She mentioned that her uncle does not remember what happened during the attack.

According to Falu, Figueroa was on his way home from a night out at the Empire City Casino in Yonkers. She expressed her disbelief at the incident, stating, "It's crazy that this could happen to a person who normally goes out, doesn't bother anybody."

Unclear Motive and Lingering Questions

The motive behind the attack remains unclear. Falu speculated that it might have been due to the suspect being drunk or having a bad day, but she emphasized that this is no excuse for harming anyone. She added, "To me, it had to be either he was drunk or having a bad day, but that's no excuse to hurt anybody."

Despite the lack of clarity regarding the motive, loved ones are praying for a speedy recovery for Figueroa. However, they still seek answers about why the suspect committed such a violent act. Falu stated, "It made no sense," reflecting the confusion and concern felt by those close to the victim.
