McFarlane Reveals Chelsea Board Secrets Post-Maresca Exit
Chelsea’s Unusual Transition and the Road to Manchester City
Chelsea’s sporting directors, players, and caretaker coaching staff recently held a meeting where the reasons behind Enzo Maresca’s departure were discussed, and the plan for the upcoming match against Manchester City was outlined. The Italian coach left the club on New Year’s Day after tensions with the owners escalated in late December.
The official announcement of Maresca’s departure came on Thursday, and just hours later, one of Chelsea’s sporting directors reached out to Calum McFarlane, the head coach of the under-21 team, to ask him to take charge of the team’s away game against Manchester City on Sunday.
McFarlane was already en route to a family trip to a Windsor light show when he received the call. He was asked how quickly he could make it to the club’s Cobham training ground that afternoon to begin assembling a temporary coaching staff and prepare for the match against City.
A Sudden Change in Leadership
Set-piece coach Bernardo Cueva has remained at Chelsea, while McFarlane brought his assistant coaches, Andy Ross and James Simmonds, along with analyst Adam Keep, for the trip to the Etihad Stadium.
McFarlane provided more insight into how he was chosen to lead the team for the crucial match against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side.
“I was actually on the way to a Windsor light show with my family,” he said. “So I got a call from one of the sporting directors, which basically said, ‘When can you get in?’ I said I can be in in an hour. So the missus wasn’t very happy about that. But I shot across and they basically explained what happened and said, ‘You're going to be preparing to play Manchester City on Sunday, we fully support you and good luck.’”
Quick Preparation and Teamwork
McFarlane, who joined Chelsea in the summer from Southampton, was joined at the training ground on Thursday by all members of his under-21s coaching staff, who had also been asked to come in at short notice.
“Once they had explained the situation and we had figured out what the staff team had looked like and what I’d like it to look like, we made calls around,” McFarlane explained. “Everyone came in at short notice to get ready for what is a massive game on Sunday.”

A New Beginning for the Blues
The sudden change in leadership highlights the unpredictable nature of football management, especially during a busy transfer window and high-stakes matches. McFarlane, despite the short notice, appears to have embraced the challenge with determination and professionalism. His experience with the under-21s has given him a unique perspective on the team's dynamics, and he is now tasked with leading them through one of their most important fixtures of the season.
As the team prepares for the match against Manchester City, the focus will be on how well McFarlane can integrate his coaching methods with the existing squad and strategy. With the support of the club’s sporting directors and the backing of the players, the hope is that this transition will be smooth and effective.
The coming days will be crucial for Chelsea as they aim to maintain their momentum and compete at the highest level. Whether this unexpected change leads to success or further challenges remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: the road ahead will be anything but ordinary.
