Man Killed by Car on Nevada Interstate After Previous Crash

ELKO COUNTY, Nev. — A man was struck by a car while walking on the interstate following a separate crash on an on-ramp, and he died on scene.

According to Nevada Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 5:37 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2025. Troopers responded to the crash on Interstate 80 near Elko County mile marker 4.

Police said that the man was a driver in a separate crash that happened on an on-ramp to I-80, and after the crash, he got out of his vehicle and began walking in the eastbound travel lane of I-80.

At the same time, a gray Volkswagen Jetta was traveling eastbound on I-80 in the right lane, and the right front of the Volkswagen hit the man in the travel lane. A witness reportedly told police that the man was yelling, jumping, sitting, and standing in the travel lane.

The man landed on the right outside shoulder of the interstate, and the Volkswagen also stopped on the shoulder, facing east near a guard rail.

The man pronounced dead on scene resulting from his injuries. The identity of the man has not yet been released, as officials are still working to notify next of kin.

The crash is an open investigation, and it is being investigated by the Nevada Highway Patrol, Major Incident Reconstruction Team. Police are requesting anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about the crash to contact the Nevada Highway Patrol Elko Office at 775-753-1111 or email ncemirt@dps.state.nv.us.

According to preliminary data from Nevada Highway Patrol, this was the 29th fatal crash they’ve investigated, and the 35th fatality.
