LSU Pursues Top Transfer Talent

LSU's Transfer Portal Strategy
The first day of the transfer portal window did not bring a flood of early commitments, but multiple reports suggest that the LSU Tigers are actively pursuing some of the top talents entering the portal. Among these players is the number one player according to ESPN, former Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sorsby will be visiting Texas Tech and LSU. The dual-threat quarterback has caught the attention of several programs, with ESPN’s Max Olson predicting a costly bidding war between the Tigers and Red Raiders. This competition is fueled by the significant NIL resources available at Texas Tech, thanks to billionaire booster Cody Campbell.
Sorsby began his college career at Indiana before transferring to Cincinnati, where he flourished. With one year of eligibility remaining, he has thrown for 7,208 yards and 60 touchdowns in his career. Additionally, he can run, rushing for 580 yards this season.
Other Quarterbacks on LSU's Radar
Sorsby is not the only quarterback LSU is targeting from the transfer portal. On3.com’s Pete Nakos reported that LSU is among the finalists for Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt. Miami and Oregon are also interested in Leavitt, who helped the Sun Devils win the Big 12 Conference Championship in 2024. However, injuries affected his performance this season.
Leavitt’s rumored price tag is four million dollars. He is scheduled to visit Kentucky on Saturday, where he will meet with new head coach Will Stein. It’s worth noting that the Wildcats’ new offensive coordinator, Joe Sloan, previously served as LSU’s offensive coordinator.
Another quarterback under consideration is Trinidad Chambliss from Ole Miss. There are reports that Chambliss wants to play for Lane Kiffin at LSU. He had an impressive performance against Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, but he is seeking an additional year of eligibility. However, according to Thamel, the NCAA might not grant him a medical redshirt waiver. Chambliss claims he did not play in 2022 at Ferris State due to persistent respiratory issues caused by tonsillitis.
Targeting a Big-Time Receiver
LSU also needs a top receiver, and former Michigan State receiver Nick Marsh is on their radar. Marsh has scheduled visits with Indiana and Notre Dame, but On3.com’s Josh Newberg suggests that LSU is also in the mix. During his two seasons with the Spartans, Marsh caught 100 passes for 1,311 yards and 9 touchdowns.
Defensive Talent in the Mix
In addition to receivers, LSU is also looking to bolster its defense. Former Penn State defensive end Chaz Coleman is one of the top defensive players in the portal. According to Newberg, Tennessee and LSU are both competing for the edge rusher. Coleman completed his freshman season at Penn State, missing several games due to an undisclosed injury. Despite finishing with just one sack, his potential is considered enormous.
