Long Lines at SF Airport After Holiday Travel

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) — The holiday season has brought record numbers of air travelers for Thanksgiving and Christmas. However, the day after New Year’s also marks a busy travel period as people make their way back home from their holiday destinations.

One notable story involved a 109-year-old fan of the Sturgis Rally who passed away in Ft. Pierre. This event highlights the significance of the annual motorcycle gathering, which draws thousands of visitors to South Dakota each year.

For many, the challenge of traveling during this time is not just about the destination but also the journey itself. Patience becomes a key virtue when navigating through crowded airports. Jenny King of Phoenix, Arizona, shared her experience at the airport, saying, “And I’m thinking people… move up lady.” Despite such wishes, the wait times remain long.

King described her experience at the airport, stating, “It’s been long. I think it’s been probably 50-minutes to an hour. We started back at the American counter, we’re here now, so we’re moving.” However, progress can be slow, especially when so many others are trying to fly to Arizona in January.

Crystal Jager of Alexandria, South Dakota, noted the slow movement at the airport, saying, “We haven’t moved very much. Maybe a couple of feet.” Air travelers who arrived hours before their flights were surprised by the long lines.

Jaden Devine of Sioux Falls shared his perspective, saying, “It didn’t really get nerve-wracking until we’re coming up on an hour before the flight departs and then we’re not even through security yet. But I think it will all work out in the end.”

Another Allegiant flight from Arizona to Sioux Falls Regional Airport brought passengers, including a Sioux Falls family who spent New Year’s with relatives.

Nikk Moore of Sioux Falls described the family reunion, saying, “My dad lives down there in Tucson, and then my sister flew in from Virginia, so kind of a small family reunion.” Moore mentioned that flying back home to Sioux Falls was a challenge due to the crowds at the Phoenix airport.

He added, “Getting a little nervous about our flight and everything and they actually called our flight up to cut around the line and so we made it just in time.” Now, the snowbirds who spent their holiday in warm Arizona will have to adjust to the cold of South Dakota.

Moore said, “All our jackets are in the bag, so we’re kind of wanting to get them out.” He also mentioned that based on his experience at the Phoenix airport, he will consider paying extra for priority boarding the next time he flies.

The challenges of traveling during peak holiday periods are not uncommon. Airports across the country often face similar issues, with long lines and delays becoming a regular part of the travel experience. For many, these experiences serve as reminders of the importance of planning ahead and being prepared for unexpected delays.

As the holiday season comes to an end, travelers are left with stories of both challenges and triumphs. Whether it's a family reunion or a simple return home, the journey is often as memorable as the destination. With the right mindset and preparation, even the busiest travel days can be managed successfully.
