Kinston's Community Cookout: From Tragedy to Triumph

KINSTON, N.C. — The 2nd Annual Community Champions Cookout took place on Friday afternoon, marking a powerful transformation of tragedy into triumph. This event is a celebration of the resilience and strength of the Kinston community, especially in the wake of a devastating incident that occurred six years ago.
The cookout serves as a reminder of how the community has come together to support one another and move forward after a difficult time. It is an opportunity for residents to honor those who have faced challenges and to recognize the positive impact they continue to make.
The attack that took place in 2020 still affects Mrs. Evernell Pittman today. She was attacked by an unknown individual using a baseball bat, which resulted in a traumatic brain injury. As a result, she is non-verbal and requires 24-hour care. Her condition has significantly altered the lives of her family and friends.
Hernika Cannon, founder of the Act Now Community Development Corporation, shared the story of how the community has responded to this challenge. "She was attacked by an unknown assailant with a baseball bat, and as a result, she has a traumatic brain injury," said Cannon. "She’s non-verbal. She’s immobile. She requires 24-hour care. It has turned our lives upside down, and today we are simply making lemonade because those were lemons that were thrown at us, and we’re doing something positive."
