A Member of a Mexican Drug Cartel Sentenced for Money Laundering

Cristian Fernando Gutierrez-Ochoa, a member of Mexico’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), has been sentenced to 11 years and eight months in a U.S. federal prison. He was found guilty of laundering millions of dollars in drug trafficking proceeds. Gutierrez-Ochoa had previously faked his death to avoid being caught by authorities.

Gutierrez-Ochoa is reportedly the son-in-law of Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, who is known as El Mencho and is the leader of the CJNG. U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell described the Jalisco New Generation Cartel as a “dangerous force” operating within the United States. She highlighted the violence and corruption associated with the organization, stating, “It’s a dangerous way to make a living. It’s a dangerous way to live.”
