Healthy Dry January Tips

WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —
Dry January is a growing trend where individuals choose to abstain from alcohol for the entire month of January. This practice is often seen as a way to reset one's habits and improve overall health after the holiday season. However, experts caution that this approach may not be suitable for everyone.
Heidi Martens, a reporter for 28/22 News, spoke with local treatment professionals about the potential risks associated with Dry January. The initiative has gained popularity, especially following weeks of festive celebrations. For casual or social drinkers, giving up alcohol for a month can lead to several health benefits, such as improved sleep, increased energy levels, and better mental clarity.
However, for individuals who consume alcohol heavily or on a daily basis, stopping abruptly can pose serious risks. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can range from mild, like headaches and insomnia, to more severe conditions, including seizures and hallucinations. Jason Harlen, chief executive officer of Wyoming Valley Alcohol and Drug Services, emphasizes the importance of caution.
"We have to remember, with alcohol, if somebody has an alcohol use disorder, or something of that nature, people could potentially experience withdrawal, alcohol withdrawal, and that could be very dangerous for people," Harlen said.
Harlen advises anyone who drinks heavily or daily to consult a doctor before starting Dry January. This step can help ensure that the process is safe and manageable. Despite the risks, many people find value in the challenge of Dry January. It offers an opportunity to reflect on drinking habits and make positive changes.
Jason Belack, a resident of Avoca, shared his personal experience with the tradition. "New Year’s Eve is known for a lot of drinking and things like that, so I kind of try to do the opposite of that. There’s a little bit of a contrarian tendency there for me, I guess, too, but, mostly, it’s just trying to start the new year off in a healthier, more positive light," he explained.
Treatment professionals also highlight that while Dry January may not be safe for everyone, it can still offer significant benefits. Many individuals report feeling physically better and experiencing improvements in their mental health. Whether it's related to depression, anxiety, or other mental health issues, reducing or eliminating alcohol consumption can contribute to overall well-being.
"Just to feel better physically. You know, a lot of people who give up drinking as well, it helps their mental health at times. Whether it be depression, whether it be anxiety, other mental health issues, you know, a lot of times it’s not the root cause, but it helps! So, I think there are a lot of benefits to Dry January as well," Harlen added.
Professionals also emphasize the importance of seeking help and support during this journey. For some, Dry January can be the first step toward long-term recovery. Support systems, whether through friends, family, or professional services, play a crucial role in maintaining sobriety and making lasting lifestyle changes.
While Dry January is not a one-size-fits-all solution, it serves as a reminder of the impact alcohol can have on physical and mental health. For those considering this challenge, understanding the risks and taking necessary precautions can make the experience both safe and beneficial.
