HARRISBURG, Pa. — At the Humane Society Harrisburg Area, the sound of a harp is becoming a familiar and comforting presence for the animals that reside there. As visitors enter the facility, they are greeted by the barks of eager dogs. However, when Lydia Hammond begins to play, the atmosphere shifts into one of calm and tranquility.

“I’m a retired nurse, and I have more time now to focus on music,” Hammond explained. “It’s something that brings me joy.”

The impact of her performances extends beyond just personal satisfaction. It seems to resonate with the animals as well. Hammond, a professional harpist from Perry County, has dedicated herself to playing at least once a month for the animals at the shelter over the years.

“I pay attention to how they respond while I play, and sometimes I adjust what I play or how I play it to help them feel a bit better,” Hammond said. “The harp has large strings that create vibrations when plucked. These vibrations last longer, and the animals can hear them more clearly than we can. It's very calming for them.”

Aspasia Yeager, who works at the shelter, shared that the sessions began as a one-time experiment. The response from the animals was overwhelmingly positive, and now Hammond regularly plays for both the dogs and even the cats.

“We’re incredibly grateful that she continues to return and offers this special enrichment experience to our animals,” Yeager said.

The presence of the harp in the shelter not only provides a unique form of entertainment but also contributes to the emotional well-being of the animals. The soothing sounds of the harp seem to create a peaceful environment that helps reduce stress and anxiety among the pets.

This initiative highlights the importance of creative and unconventional methods in animal care. While traditional approaches such as feeding and medical treatment are essential, non-traditional methods like music therapy can offer additional benefits. In this case, the harp serves as a bridge between humans and animals, fostering a sense of connection and comfort.

For those interested in learning more about the work being done at the Humane Society Harrisburg Area, there are various ways to get involved. Volunteers, donations, and even simple acts of kindness can make a significant difference in the lives of these animals.

In addition to the harp sessions, the shelter offers a range of programs aimed at improving the quality of life for the animals in their care. From adoption events to educational outreach, the organization strives to create a supportive environment for all creatures.

The story of Lydia Hammond and her harp is a reminder of the power of compassion and creativity. It shows that even small gestures can have a lasting impact, especially when it comes to the well-being of animals. As the harp continues to play its part in the lives of the animals at the shelter, it serves as a symbol of hope and healing.
