A Tragic Incident in Columbus

A tragic incident occurred in an upscale neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio, where a respected dentist and his wife were found dead in their home. The couple, Spencer Tepe, 37, and Monique Tepe, 39, were discovered on Tuesday after a welfare check at their residence located on the 1400 block of N. 4th Street. Authorities confirmed that two small children were also present in the house but were unharmed.

The police have not found any signs of forced entry at the scene, and no firearm was recovered. This has led investigators to consider the possibility that the killer may have known the victims. The case is currently being treated as a double homicide rather than a murder-suicide, based on the lack of a firearm and the fact that the children were left unharmed.

The Children Are Safe

The Tepes’ children, who are aged 4 and 1, are now under the care of relatives. Their brother-in-law, Rob Misleh, shared the family’s statement with CNN, expressing their deep grief over the loss. The statement emphasized the family's commitment to seeking justice for the tragedy and honoring the memory of Spencer and Monique by protecting the future of their children.

The couple was described as having a beautiful and deeply happy relationship. They loved to travel, laugh, and build a life rooted in love. Their absence is felt deeply by those who knew them.

Concerns Over Missing Work

The concern for the couple began when the owner of the dental practice where Spencer worked called 911 after he missed work on Tuesday morning. Dr. Mark Valrose of Athens Dental Depot expressed his worry, noting that Spencer was always punctual and would contact them if there were any issues. He mentioned that they could not reach Spencer’s wife, which added to their concern.

An officer responded at 9:22 a.m., but there was no answer. Colleagues later drove to the Tepes' home, and one friend heard children crying inside. However, no one answered the door. The friend called police around 9:56 a.m., describing hearing a child yell but not being able to get in.

Around 10:03 a.m., an audibly distressed man called 911, reporting that there was a body inside.

Possible Scenarios

CNN Senior National Security Analyst Juliette Kayyem suggested that either of two scenarios might explain the crime: a stranger at the door who killed the couple or a narrative involving someone who knew them. Investigators will look into forensics, possible entry points, whether anything was stolen, and the couple’s history to determine if there was a threat to the community.

Columbus police have not yet provided details about a motive or whether the couple was targeted. However, Kayyem noted that this type of crime is exceptionally rare, especially given the lack of forced entry or signs of burglary.

Honoring the Victims

Athens Dental Depot announced its closure for the rest of the week following the news of Spencer Tepe’s passing. The office posted a heartfelt message on Facebook, expressing their deep sorrow and condolences to the family and loved ones.

The Tepe family described the couple as extraordinary people whose lives were filled with love, joy, and a deep connection to others. Spencer was a graduate of Ohio State University and a member of the American Dental Association, known for his dedication to serving others. Monique was a loving mother and had a background in childhood education, bringing care and attention to everything she did.

The community is mourning the loss of a couple who touched many lives and left a lasting impact on those around them.
