CINCINNATI (WXIX) - A large number of people came together at Laurel Playground to grieve the death of an 11-year-old girl who was shot and killed on New Year’s Day in the West End. The tragedy has left the community heartbroken and searching for answers.

QueenEr’Re Reed was playing with her cousins at the playground when she was fatally injured. Her relatives, Linda and Darlene Kennedy, described her as a "good spirit" and a "child of God."

"You used to be playing with your toys in the house, just got your Christmas gifts, and now you have to bury your baby," Darlene told FOX19 NOW.

The cousins often spent time together, playing games and even basketball. In fact, two of Linda's grandsons had just returned from the park and heard the shooting.

Linda explained that the incident involved a "crossfire" of gunshots. She described the emotional toll of the event, especially when she took her grandmother to the hospital the night before. "The pain and suffering we saw last night would break your heart," Darlene said.

Despite promises made by authorities to install security cameras in the area, they are still not in place. This has raised concerns among residents about safety and accountability.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, hundreds of people gathered to mourn QueenEr’Re's loss. The event also became a call for action and justice.

At the vigil, a speaker addressed the crowd, saying, "Right now we are decreeing and declaring that justice will come on behalf of [QueenEr’Re]. Yes, that justice will come, Lord, that the perpetrators, Lord God, will have no peace."

The community is determined not to lose another child. They are urging anyone with information to come forward, even if they feel too afraid to speak up.

"Somebody knows what happened? Just say something," Linda said. "You don’t have to be seen. Tell nobody nothing. Just call the police. Say something because this little girl needs justice."

Several attendees at the vigil expressed their intention to organize and seek solutions to prevent future tragedies. Their main goal is to ensure that justice is served for QueenEr’Re and to create a safer environment for children in the neighborhood.

  • Call for Action: Community members are pushing for more resources and support to address the root causes of violence.
  • Demand for Accountability: There is a strong desire for transparency and swift action against those responsible for the shooting.
  • Support for Families: The family of QueenEr’Re is receiving support from the community, which is helping them cope with their grief.

The tragedy has sparked conversations about the need for better safety measures and stronger community bonds. As the investigation continues, the hope remains that justice will be served and that such losses can be prevented in the future.
