Community Grieves After Beaumont Teen Killed in Apartment Shooting

A Community Mourns the Loss of a Young Life
Family members, friends, and former classmates came together on Friday afternoon at the North Ridge Manor Apartments to pay tribute to 17-year-old Kryst’shun Burkett. The gathering took place at the same complex where the Beaumont teen was fatally shot earlier in the week. As a symbol of remembrance, a sea of blue and silver balloons was released into the sky, marking a moment of unity and grief.
Burkett was killed on Tuesday night while visiting friends at the apartment complex. Those who attended the event described him as more than just a young man—he was a loving father, an aspiring rapper, and someone with bright aspirations for the future. “He always lit up a room,” said Talia Levanc, a former classmate. “He was the nicest person I’ll ever meet.”
Arrests Made in Connection to the Crime
Beaumont police have arrested 19-year-old Leon Goodman in connection with Burkett’s death. Goodman is currently being held on a $1.5 million bond on a murder charge. Authorities also revealed that Goodman had recently been placed on probation on December 4 for injury to a child. This information has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his involvement in the case.
A 16-year-old was also arrested in relation to the incident. However, due to age restrictions, police have not provided additional details about the juvenile suspect. The lack of information has left many in the community seeking clarity and justice.
Personal Memories and Grief
Kryst’shun Burkett’s grandmother, Anna Winn Johnson, shared heartfelt memories of her grandson. She described him as smart, creative, and on track to graduate early. “He was goofy, he loved to make music,” she said. “He had something going for himself. His life was taken too soon.”
Johnson emphasized that Burkett knew the suspects and considered them friends. She believes the shooting was not gang-related. “He was just visiting,” she said. “He came outside and he got shot. There was no reason.”
Burkett was also a father to a 10-month-old daughter. His former partner, Brenya Boudreaux, spoke about the impact of his loss. “I will forever carry his name,” she said. “I’ll be raising his daughter with all the support and family I have.”
Calls for Change and Awareness
As the investigation continues, Johnson hopes that her grandson’s death will serve as a wake-up call about youth violence in the community. “Reach one, teach one,” she said. “When you see these young men, help them instead of labeling them.”
Her words reflect a growing concern among families and community leaders about the need for intervention and support for at-risk youth. Many believe that addressing the root causes of violence is essential to preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Ongoing Investigation
Beaumont police have stated that there is no additional releasable information regarding the case. While the arrests have brought some closure, many questions remain unanswered. Families and friends continue to seek justice and hope for a safer future for their children.
