Colorado fitness experts share 2026 success strategies

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Just two days into the new year, gyms across Colorado Springs are experiencing a noticeable increase in visitors who are eager to kick off 2026 with their fitness goals. Whether it's losing weight, building strength, or simply improving overall health, local experts emphasize that achieving these goals requires more than just showing up at the gym.
The Importance of a Realistic Plan
“Everybody is different,” said Jack Leeper, manager and tour guide at Colorado Iron Gym. “Some people need a friend. Some people just need talking to. But a workout partner definitely helps to inspire you and keep you accountable. However, you must make a commitment and stick to it.”
Leeper pointed out that many individuals abandon their resolutions when the effort becomes overwhelming, both during workouts and in other aspects of life.
“It is too much work. A lot of people do not want to dedicate the time that it actually takes to do it because not only is it in the gym, but it is also about eating well and taking care of yourself,” he explained.
Setting Specific Goals
At other gyms, coaches highlight that people often give up when they stop seeing results, especially if their goals are too broad or vague.
“So I am going to get fit this year, or I am going to get in shape, that is not a goal,” said JD Thomason, owner and head coach at Starting Strength. “In the strength training world, your goal might be, I want to squat 225 pounds this year. Now we have a specific, tangible thing. And we can make a plan and work towards that.”
Thomason added that access to a gym is not necessary to make progress. Simple habits, such as taking a 15 to 30-minute walk after dinner, can help build consistency and momentum.
“Make your goal realistic. Make it achievable. But do not make it easy. Make it something very specific. Very slowly but surely, you are going to make progress towards your goal,” he said.
Focus on Consistency and Sustainable Habits
Fitness professionals stress that staying consistent and focusing on sustainable habits is crucial for long-term success, rather than just having a strong start to the new year.
Tips for Getting Started
For those looking to begin their New Year’s resolutions, local gyms often provide free guidance, tours, and beginner programs to help people set realistic and attainable goals. These resources can be invaluable for anyone looking to create a solid foundation for their fitness journey.
