Coast Guard Halts Search for 77-Year-Old Cruise Passenger Lost Off Cuba
U.S. Coast Guard Ends Search for 77-Year-Old Woman Who Went Overboard
The U.S. Coast Guard has officially suspended its search for a 77-year-old woman who went overboard from a cruise ship near Cuba on New Year’s Day. The incident occurred during the early hours of January 1, raising concerns among the crew and passengers aboard the vessel.
For eight consecutive hours, Coast Guard crews conducted an extensive search over an area spanning 690 square miles (1,787 square kilometers) in an effort to locate the woman. Despite their efforts, no sign of her was found, leading to the decision to halt the operation. The identity of the woman has not been disclosed, as per the Coast Guard's statement.

The woman was traveling aboard the Holland America Line cruise ship Nieuw Statendam when she went overboard on Thursday. The incident took place approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Sabana, Cuba. At this time, details regarding how the woman fell overboard remain unclear, with no immediate information released by the authorities or the cruise line.
To assist in the search, the Coast Guard deployed both helicopters and a large vessel known as a cutter. These resources were used to cover the vast area where the woman was last seen. The use of such advanced equipment highlights the seriousness of the situation and the commitment of the Coast Guard to locate the individual.
Holland America Line issued a statement expressing their condolences to the woman’s family. “Our family assistance team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts are with the guest’s loved ones during this difficult time,” the company said.
The Nieuw Statendam had departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Saturday for a seven-day cruise through the eastern Caribbean. The ship was originally scheduled to arrive in Key West, Florida, on Friday. However, due to the ongoing search and the need to address the incident, the cruise line announced that the stop in Key West would be canceled.
This event has sparked renewed discussions about safety measures on cruise ships, particularly concerning the prevention of passengers going overboard. While the exact cause of the incident remains under investigation, it serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety protocols on board such vessels.
As the search comes to an end, the focus now shifts to supporting the woman’s family and understanding what led to the tragic event. The cruise line has pledged to cooperate fully with any investigations and to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
