Bronzeville Grieves Loss of Beloved Chicken and Waffles Leader

A Life of Service and Community
Brian Mills was more than just a manager at the Bronzeville restaurant; he was a vital part of the community, known for his unwavering dedication and kindness. His sudden passing left a profound impact on everyone who knew him, especially those in the South Side of Chicago.
Mills spent 17 years running the Bronzeville restaurant, but his influence extended far beyond the walls of the establishment. He was a pillar of support for many, always looking for ways to give back and uplift others. The restaurant's owner, Darnell Johnson, spoke about how Mills transformed the neighborhood through his actions.
"Brian got out in this community, and he changed this community," Johnson said. "He had a way of bringing people together and making a difference."
Remembering a Community Leader
On Friday night, the community came together to honor Brian Mills, gathering at the corner of Oakwood Street and King Drive. This was a fitting tribute to a man who had touched so many lives. The event was a celebration of his life and the legacy he left behind.
Johnson shared a story about one of the many community events that Mills organized. "He called me one time and said he wanted to do something for 80 mothers, and I said, 'Brian, 80 mothers?' He said yes. I said, 'Man, that's great. If we can get 100, let's do it,'" Johnson recalled.
This kind of initiative was typical of Mills, who was always looking for ways to help others. His sister, Chelsea Mills, reflected on his passion for giving back.
"He came back to me and said, 'I think I want to give a back-to-school giveaway.' And then it went to food giveaways and grocery giveaways. And then it went to toy giveaways," she said.
A Sudden Loss
At age 45, Brian Mills passed away in his sleep two days before the new year. The cause of death is still unknown, but his family emphasized the importance of taking care of one’s health.
"We've yet to figure out the cause of death, because this was sudden, but we do know there are things that we could do to make sure that we're maintaining our health; working out, eating right, going to the doctor," Chelsea said.
She hopes that his passing will remind people to take care of themselves while also helping others. "He came back to me and said, 'I think I want to give a back-to-school giveaway.' And then it went to food giveaways and grocery giveaways. And then it went to toy giveaways," she added.
Continuing the Legacy
Even after his passing, Brian Mills continues to bring people together. Nearly 100 people gathered outside the restaurant to remember him, showing the deep impact he had on the community.
In November, the restaurant handed out Thanksgiving turkeys to the community, a gesture that was just one of many that Mills insisted on. While there is a void left by his absence, there is also comfort in knowing that he touched so many lives.
"He's always had the ability to bring people together," his sister said. "Even in death, he still brought people together."
A Lasting Impact
Brian Mills is survived by his four children and three sisters. His legacy will continue through the community he helped build and the lives he touched. As people reflect on his life, they remember not only his contributions to the restaurant but also his selfless spirit and dedication to others.
"He was just rare, man," said Seandale Hunley. "There will never be another one like him."
As the community mourns his loss, they also celebrate the positive change he brought to their lives. Brian Mills may be gone, but his impact will be felt for years to come.
