AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF)- After years of planning and preparation, a major project is finally taking shape and moving closer to completion. This ambitious initiative promises to become a landmark for the city and a significant boost for downtown Augusta.

Brad Usry, Vice-Chair for the Augusta Coliseum Authority, shared his excitement about the upcoming development. "It’s going to be a showpiece for years to come, and I hope it’s a catalyst for the downtown and all of Augusta," he said. The site of the future 10,000-seat arena has been busy with activity over the past few months, with various construction milestones already achieved.

Work crews have laid the foundation, completed the concrete deck on the second level, and installed a new sanitary sewer line service. As the new year approaches, the next phase of construction is set to begin.

"We’re working on the third level now, that’s about to be poured. Then the fourth level will go in, the suite level and concrete will be poured, and we’ll soon be working on pouring the ice floor," Usry explained.

Regarding the name of the arena, Usry mentioned that discussions are ongoing. "No update for right now, but we’ll be sure to update the public when it comes time," he added.

Meanwhile, there's a growing sense of optimism surrounding the return of a hockey team to the area after more than a decade. Recently, it was revealed that the team will be co-owned by Tim Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner.

"It’s ownership, and it’s the league they’re in. The East Coast Hockey League, the owner (Sawyer Group), and Tim Tebow? With that combo, we’re in good shape," said Usry.

The Coliseum Authority is aiming to complete the arena in time for the Richmond County high school graduations in May 2027. "I think that’s optimistic. That would be the ultimate goal, to have graduates walk across the stage in May of ‘27 in June. But again, that’s very optimistic, and that’s really getting after it. I think we’re more optimistic about late summer/early fall to be ready for the hockey season. But, we’re still pushing," Usry added.

The Coliseum Authority will hold their first meeting of 2026 later in January. In the meantime, the hockey team does not yet have a name, and the authority is seeking input from the community.

Residents and fans are encouraged to participate in the naming process by filling out the “Name the Team” form on the official website. Your voice could help shape the identity of the team and its connection to the local community.

As the project moves forward, the focus remains on creating a space that will serve as a hub for sports, entertainment, and community events. With continued progress and support, the arena is poised to become a vital part of Augusta’s landscape for years to come.
