Angelina Jolie's Humanitarian Visit to Rafah Crossing

Angelina Jolie, renowned actress and former special envoy to the United Nations Refugee Agency, recently visited the Rafah Crossing in Egypt as part of a humanitarian trip. This visit took place amid growing concerns over the challenges faced by aid organizations operating in the Gaza Strip.

Jolie’s journey highlighted the ongoing struggles of humanitarian agencies trying to deliver much-needed supplies into the region. In a statement, she mentioned her conversations with these groups, emphasizing their efforts to overcome restrictions and challenges in aid delivery. She also described walking through a large warehouse filled with items that had been denied entry, most of which were medical supplies.

Israel's Actions and Aid Group Concerns

Earlier this week, Israel announced it would suspend the operations of several international aid groups that failed to renew their registration. The new requirements include providing personal details of staff members working in Gaza. These regulations have raised significant concerns among aid agencies, who argue that such measures could compromise the safety of their employees.

Israel claims that these registration rules are necessary to prevent Hamas from exploiting international aid. However, the United Nations and various aid organizations have rejected this assertion. A recent U.S. government review found no evidence of widespread theft by Hamas, contradicting claims made by both Israel and the U.S. State Department.

Deteriorating Conditions in Gaza

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has reached a critical point, with 10 countries warning of "renewed deterioration" and "catastrophic" conditions in the enclave. The region is currently facing harsh winter weather, including heavy rain and plunging temperatures, which have worsened already dire living conditions.

Fierce rain and strong winds have destroyed many of the flimsy tents where Palestinians are forced to live. At least 20 people have been killed due to collapsing homes and buildings as residents seek shelter from the severe weather, according to the Hamas-run Government Media Office in Gaza (GMO).

Discussions on Aid and Access

During her visit, Jolie met with aid workers from the Egyptian Red Crescent and other local organizations to discuss ways to provide additional aid to Gaza. She emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and sustained, safe access to ensure that aid, fuel, and critical medical supplies can be delivered effectively.

“Every day of disruption costs lives,” Jolie stated, highlighting the importance of moving winter items and essential medical equipment without delay. She expressed gratitude to the volunteers working tirelessly to provide humanitarian assistance.

In addition to her discussions on aid, Jolie is also meeting Palestinian and Sudanese refugee families in Egypt, as reported by her office. Her visit underscores the critical need for continued support and action to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
