Earthquake Strikes Southern and Central Mexico

A powerful earthquake shook southern and central Mexico on Friday, disrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press briefing of the year. The tremors triggered seismic alarms and left at least two people dead, while thousands of residents and tourists rushed into the streets.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.5 and its epicenter was located near the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, close to the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco. According to Mexico’s national seismological agency, there were over 500 aftershocks following the initial quake. The state’s civil defense agency reported several landslides around Acapulco and on other highways in the region.

Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado confirmed that a 50-year-old woman living in a small community near the epicenter died when her home collapsed. Additionally, authorities stated that a hospital in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero, suffered significant structural damage, leading to the evacuation of various patients.

Residents and tourists in both Mexico City and Acapulco quickly evacuated buildings as the shaking began. Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada reported that one person died after experiencing a medical emergency and falling while evacuating a building.

The U.S. Geological Survey noted that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 21.7 miles (35 kilometers), approximately 2.5 miles north-northwest of Rancho Viejo, Guerrero. This location is situated in the mountains about 57 miles northeast of Acapulco.

President Sheinbaum resumed her press briefing shortly after the quake, demonstrating resilience in the face of the unexpected disruption.

Personal Accounts from the Region

José Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights defender who lives on one of the peaks surrounding Acapulco, described the experience of the earthquake. He mentioned hearing a strong rumble and noticing that all the neighborhood dogs began barking.

“In that moment, the seismic alert went off on my cellphone,” he said. “Then the shaking began to feel strong with a lot of noise.”

Díaz Taboada noted that the shaking was less intense than in some previous earthquakes. He had prepared a backpack with essentials, ready to leave if needed as aftershocks continued. However, he was unable to reach some friends who live along the Costa Chica, southeast of Acapulco, due to disrupted communications.

Ongoing Concerns and Recovery Efforts

As the region continues to assess the damage, officials are working to ensure the safety of residents and provide necessary assistance. The situation highlights the importance of preparedness and quick response in areas prone to seismic activity.

With ongoing aftershocks and potential for further landslides, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines. Emergency services are on high alert, and communities are coming together to support those affected by the disaster.

Preparing for Future Events

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of natural disasters and the need for continuous preparedness. Residents in seismically active regions are encouraged to have emergency kits, know evacuation routes, and stay informed about seismic alerts.
