$500K Grant Enhances Walking Safety Near Niskayuna Schools

NISKAYUNA, N.Y. — A significant initiative is underway in the town of Niskayuna as it secures grant funding to install sidewalks at two local elementary schools. This project is part of the Climate Smart Communities (CSC) Grant, which is offered by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). The goal of this program is to empower communities to take meaningful steps in addressing climate change and building a more sustainable future.
The town has been awarded $500,000 to construct sidewalks around Birchwood and Hillside Elementary Schools. Officials believe that these new walkways will not only improve safety but also encourage residents to choose walking over driving, especially when traveling to and from school. By making it easier and safer for people to walk, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and promote healthier lifestyles.
In addition to environmental benefits, the sidewalks are expected to enhance pedestrian safety throughout the neighborhood. With more people walking, there could be a noticeable improvement in traffic patterns and overall community connectivity.
“DEC’s Climate Smart Communities grants support municipal investments to reduce pollution, protect the environment, and increase community resilience to climate impacts and severe weather,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “These projects are essential in helping communities adapt to the challenges posed by a changing climate.”
As part of the CSC Grant Program, municipalities are typically required to provide a 50 percent match for most projects. However, the state has taken steps to make these grants more accessible, especially for communities facing financial challenges or located in disadvantaged areas. Last year’s budget allowed DEC to cover up to 80 percent of the costs for qualifying projects, making it easier for towns like Niskayuna to implement important infrastructure improvements.
The funding for Niskayuna’s sidewalk project aligns with broader efforts across New York State to create more walkable, eco-friendly communities. By investing in infrastructure that supports active transportation, the town is taking a proactive approach to reducing its environmental footprint while improving the quality of life for residents.
This initiative also reflects a growing trend in urban planning, where cities and towns are rethinking how they design public spaces to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists. Sidewalks, bike lanes, and green spaces are becoming key components of sustainable development, contributing to both environmental and social well-being.
