Changing Priorities in European City Breaks

A recent survey reveals that more than half (56%) of holidaymakers plan to travel more frequently in 2026. However, many are looking to cut costs, suggesting a shift in how people approach their city breaks.

Location often takes precedence over luxury when choosing where to stay, according to the research. The survey was conducted in December among 2,000 individuals who had taken a European city break in the past year or intend to do so in the next 12 months.

When asked about their preferences for accommodation, 71% of respondents emphasized the importance of a prime city centre location. In contrast, only 7% would prioritize luxury facilities, 9% would prefer on-site food and drink options, and 7% would look for gyms and fitness amenities.

Nearly a third (29%) of holidaymakers anticipate reducing their overall spending on European city breaks in the coming year, while 9% plan to increase their expenditure. This data comes from a survey commissioned by Safestay, a pan-European hostel operator.

When asked what made their favorite European city break memorable, nearly one-fifth (18%) of respondents cited great local food and drink, while 15% highlighted the people they traveled with.

Looking ahead, Prague and Copenhagen tied for the top spot as the cities UK holidaymakers most want to visit in 2026, each receiving 17% of the votes. Venice followed closely with 14%, as did Athens and Barcelona, both at 14%. Paris also secured 13% of the votes.

According to the survey, which was conducted by Find Out Now, these cities represent the most sought-after destinations for UK travelers in the upcoming year.

Peter Zielke, the chief operating officer of Safestay, commented on the findings: “This research highlights a clear shift in how people are thinking about city breaks. Travelers are prioritizing experiences over fill-ins and are becoming much more deliberate about where they spend their money. Being right in the heart of a city, close to the culture, food, and attractions is the most important factor.”

As the travel landscape continues to evolve, it’s evident that budget-conscious yet experience-driven travelers are shaping the future of city breaks. With a focus on location and cultural immersion, holidaymakers are redefining what makes a trip memorable. Whether it’s the vibrant streets of Prague or the scenic canals of Copenhagen, the desire for authentic experiences is driving the choices of travelers across Europe.
