Seo Ye-ji Makes Her Play Debut in a Tragic Love Story

Actor Seo Ye-ji is set to make her stage debut as the tragic soprano Yun Sim-deok in the play Praise of the Company. The production, announced by Show & Telplay on the 26th, will run from February 30 to March 2 at the M Theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Seoul. This marks a significant milestone for the actress, known for her roles in popular dramas such as Eve, It's Okay to Be Okay, and Save Me.

The play is set in the 1920s and tells the story of the ill-fated love between Korea’s first soprano, Yun Sim-deok, and playwright Kim Woo-jin. Based on Yoon Dae-sung’s original play Praise of History, the work adds a modern emotional layer by introducing new characters like Na Hye-seok, Korea’s first female Western painter. Critics have praised the play for its deep exploration of the love, sorrow, and societal constraints faced by artists during that era.

Seo Ye-ji will take on the role of Yun Sim-deok, marking her first foray into theater. Fans are eager to see how she will translate her screen presence into a live performance. She will be joined by Jeon So-mi, who will also portray Yun Sim-deok in a double-casting arrangement. This means that audiences will have the opportunity to see two different interpretations of the character throughout the run.

In addition to Seo Ye-ji, other notable actors include Park Eun-seok and Kwak Si-yang, who will alternate in the role of Kim Woo-jin. Kim Ryeo-eun and Jin So-yeon will play Na Hye-seok, while Park Sun-ho and Kim Gun-ho will portray Hong Nan-pa.

A Controversial Past

Despite her upcoming stage performance, Seo Ye-ji has had her share of public scrutiny. In April 2021, she was involved in a controversy regarding Kim Jung-hyun, who was cast as the male lead in the MBC drama Time. Kim Jung-hyun was criticized for being dismissive of his co-star, Seo-hyun, during a production presentation and later withdrew from the project. Some speculated that the owner of Seo Ye-ji, who was in a relationship with Kim Jung-hyun at the time, may have influenced his behavior.

According to leaked Kakao Talk messages, Seo Ye-ji reportedly instructed Kim Jung-hyun to revise the script without any romantic elements and to treat the staff harshly. In response, Seo Ye-ji denied involvement, stating that the controversy was not caused by her. She explained that Kim Jung-hyun had previously asked her, who was filming another drama, not to film a kiss scene. Their exchange included comments like, “Then don’t do it either,” which she described as a typical argument between lovers.
