Scots Soldiers Keep Tradition Alive with Blanket Design Contest

Scottish soldiers have maintained a long-standing wartime tradition by continuing their annual blanket-decorating competition while stationed abroad. This unique event has become a cherished part of the holiday season for members of the 4th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland (4Scots), who have been based in Dhekelia, Cyprus, since August.

As the Christmas season approaches, the soldiers have been busy decorating blankets that will be displayed for others in the battalion to admire. These creations often serve as a reflection on the year that has passed, offering a personal touch to the festive spirit. The tradition dates back to the Second World War, when soldiers stationed in harsh conditions sought to bring some warmth and cheer to their bleak surroundings.

Over time, the practice evolved into a regiment-wide competition, where the best-decorated blanket would be recognized as the winner. This tradition not only provided a creative outlet but also helped to foster a sense of community among the troops.

The 4Scots remain in Cyprus throughout the holiday season as part of the British Army’s high-readiness standby force. Despite being away from home, the soldiers continue to uphold this meaningful tradition. This year’s competition featured another standout entry from last year’s champion, Corporal Lewis Devlin-May.

His blanket features a stag standing among poppies, symbolizing remembrance for those who came before.

Major Jamie Mackinnon of 4Scots emphasized the importance of maintaining such traditions, especially when serving abroad. He stated:

“It’s important to keep these traditions going when you’re at home, but they matter even more when you’re serving abroad. They help keep the battalion connected, remind the Jocks of home, boost morale, and it gives everyone a chance to pause and reflect on the year.”

He added:

“It’s been a big year for us at 4Scots, and across the wider Royal Regiment of Scotland, so the chance to continue a fun tradition and get creative ahead of the festive period means a lot to the Jocks, even while they remain focused on the job at hand.”

This annual event serves as more than just a creative activity—it is a way for the soldiers to stay connected with each other and with their heritage. It also provides a much-needed moment of reflection and unity during a time when many are far from their families.
